Día de Los Muertos: A Community Event

Boosters of Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is supporting Día de Los Muertos at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park Saturday and Sunday, October 28 and 29, 2023. Throughout the weekend, visitors can explore the museums to see altares de muertos (altars of the dead) produced by local artists celebrating influential Old Town citizens, participate in hands-on activities, and sign-up for a sugar skull painting workshop (additional material fee). Around the Plaza de Armas, San Diego artists are invited to create chalk art celebrating many communities that have defined “Old Town” over the centuries.

Visitors are encouraged to honor lost loved ones by contributing their name to the Community Altar located in the Plaza de Armas in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. This project is made possible by the State of California’s Arts in Parks program, which is a partnership between California Department of Parks and Recreation, the California Arts Council and Parks California. Support for this event is also provided by the Boosters of Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, which will have themed items for sale at the Park Store and a table selling marigolds near the community altar (by the flagpole). Saturday, October 28 at 7 p.m. San Diego Public Library will be presenting a FREE community showing of Disney Pixar’s Coco in the Plaza de Armas.

Entry and parking is FREE at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park.
